LIFESTYLE VS. STUDIO NEWBORN SESSION: WHAT’S THE BEST CHOICE FOR YOU?

Bringing home a new baby is unforgettable. It’s a moment in time you’ll want to hold onto forever—which is why newborn photography is such a meaningful investment. But when it comes to choosing the type of session, many new parents ask:

Should I choose lifestyle or traditional newborn photography? At Sally Jo Schlautman Photography, based in Hooper, Nebraska, I specialize in both styles—so I’m here to help you decide what’s best for your family.

Traditional Newborn Photography: Timeless & Posed

Studio newborn photography is perfect for parents who want a polished, fine-art, styled session. These take place in my studio, typically within the first two weeks of your baby’s life when they are still very sleepy and easy to pose.

Why families love it:

- Soft wraps, delicate poses, and timeless styling

- Everything is provided and handled in-studio. Sit back & relax while the photographer handles baby & does most of the work.

- Professional lighting for a flawless look

Things to consider:

- Best for babies between 5–14 days old

- Sessions can take 2–3 hours with breaks

- More baby-focused

Lifestyle Newborn Photography: Authentic & raw

Lifestyle newborn sessions happen in your home, where your baby’s story is already unfolding. Instead of posing every shot, I gently guide you into real moments—snuggling in the nursery, cozying up on the couch, or rocking baby to sleep.

Why families love it:

- More relaxed and intimate setting

- Captures real emotions and everyday life

Things to consider:

- Your home becomes the backdrop (but don’t stress—real is beautiful!)

- More flexible on timing—even after 2–3 weeks

- Focuses more on connection than posed styling

- Requires nice natural lighting so photographing in rooms with big windows is preferred

So… Which One’s Right for You?

 Ask yourself:

Do you love styled portraits and artistic details?

→ Choose a studio newborn session.

Want to remember life at home with your growing family?

→ A lifestyle session might be your perfect match.

Not sure?

→ Let’s combine both in a hybrid session!

There’s no wrong choice—only what feels most meaningful to you. Whether you prefer posed and polished images or more realistic and raw moments, my goal is to create an experience that feels easy, authentic, and unforgettable.
